Medical colleges in USA

  • So you want to be a doctor? study medicine in the United States, nothing less! As the United States is not the same as Mexico. I’m going to tell you about the different steps you’ll have to take to become a US doctor.

Step 1: study an Undergraduate in applied science To complete the academic preparation of a general practitioner  in the United States, first of all you must study a pre-degree (Undergraduate) in some applied science. These undergraduate programs must be within the areas of Biology,

Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics. These programs can be taken at universities that do not have medical schools, since most of the students look for another more specialized university in that area to study the specialty or graduate.

A great example is the Kings Education undergraduate program at the University of Canisius. Another example is Harvard Medical University, where medical students require a year of biology and two years of chemistry with laboratory experience, one year of physics, one year of Calculus and one year of Expository Writing. These basic requirements are common in most medical schools in the United States, but you should check with each university about their conditions and additional courses you should take.

Step 2: Medical School Admission Test Once the pre-degree is completed, you must pass the Medical School Admission Test, an exam that is designed to measure the student’s knowledge and skills in four critical areas: writing, verbal evaluation, biological sciences and physical sciences. Once you have passed this test, you can really start studying medicine in the United States. You will be able to enter Universities with medical schools for approximately 4 more years.

Step 3: Take 4 years of Medicine During those four years, students must take pre-clinical and clinical studies. The pre-clinical studies are generally completed in the first two years and consist of related courses in Biology, Anatomy, Chemistry and Research. The next two years, students begin clinical studies, which consist of more practice and research.

Step 4: the Residence
You are already a doctor … or almost! To complete the program in the medical school, a minimum of 3 years of residence is required as a requirement, but it can be extended up to 7 years. Physicians can apply for residency programs at most hospitals and medical facilities in the United States. A hospital that has become very famous for its residents is the Seattle Grace Hospital, from the Gray’s Anatomy series. But do not look for it to do your residence, because it does not exist in real life 🙂

Some residences are longer because they require more time to learn certain specialties in medicine. For example, a doctor specializing in family medicine will complete his residency in three years, but one who specializes in reconstructive surgery may take five more years to complete residency.

Step 5: You are already a United States doctor!
Once you complete medical school with residency, you will get an MD. But you can not practice this profession until you are endorsed by the State Medical Board in the place where you want to practice.

conclusion
Studying medicine in the United States is a long career and requires a thorough research to start your undergraduate degree at a university that allows you to transfer to one of the universities that offer the specialty you want to study.

The medical career in the United States is long and difficult. And also the places offered by the United States are limited. If you really want to study medicine in the United States you should be very aware that it will take you effort and several years to obtain your doctor’s license. You will have to be very perseverant and dedicate a lot of time to your studies. But if you manage to complete this process, the reward will be very satisfactory.
